Just want to send out some love and respect to the people of Harlem for sticking up for what was rightfully theirs.
Some corporate genius thinks it will be a good idea to take 125th street, the home of The Apollo, the Cotton Club and 71 mom and pop stores, and build 2000 condos there.
Yikes, what is happening?
I am a self confessed cynic but doesn’t this smell fishy, like gentrification fishy? Are they not taking on of the cultural capitals of the world and ‘tidying up’? What of the days of Zora Neale Hurston and the Harlem renaissance? What of silvia’s soul food?
Anyway, I don’t want to harp on because i have a tendency to see the shadows rather than the light, and I hope it turns out the best for all, It just seems a little sad.
Maybe I’ll just leave you with a Zora quote.
‘I have been made to believe in this democracy thing, and I am all for tasting this democracy out. The flavor must be good. If the Occident is so intent in keeping the taste out of darker mouths that it spends all those billions and expends all those billions and expends all those millions of lives, colored ones too, to keep it among themselves, then it must be something good. I crave to sample this gorgeous thing. So I cannot say anything different from repeal of all Jim Crow laws! Not in some future generation, but repeal now and forever!!’
