Hi Blog..
Y’know I nearly got up in the middle of the night to write you the other night. It was the night of my birthday and in the Sunday Times that day there was a brochure. I guess there was one of these in every Sunday Times paper out there. This thing was about half an inch thick and super glossy, like a swanky magazine. It was selling New York real estate! I couldn’t believe it. Not one thing in there was under 5 million dollars. It was crazy. It was pretty evident that this company had probably paid for the advertising by selling one of these luxury condos. It was kind of revolting. The contrast between the stories in the Sunday paper and the gross wealth of those who can buy and sell these puppies, it just rubs me the wrong way and it is a sure sign that the rich are getting richer and the poor are becoming more and more desperate.
Anyway, I was lying awake that night and It got me thinking about something I read in the Brochure. ‘This apartment comes with a spectacular view of the Freedom Towers’
FREEDOM TOWERS. What a stupid, stupid name for those things. I’d heard that they were going to be called this a while back now, but I think a culmination of events and maybe me turning 31 jolted this picture in to full view and I lay awake for three hours fuming over the ignorance and the hypocrisy behind such a name. It’s almost as clever as ‘freedom fries’. Why must we be so tacky and tasteless? What is it about two huge financial fingers sticking up in to the sky that represents freedom? Who is free here? The people that work on the 300th floor, working at their computers all day? The people at the bottom begging for loose change? The people selling glass statues of the old twin towers? The families of the ones lost in the attack? They can’t even find the ‘freedom’ to come to an agreement to build the things. It’s a super sized joke. And as for the freedom that we are trying to impose on others? How is that whole thing going?
The sad thing about it all it is a small indication of a much bigger problem. Freedom in this country has become an expensive commodity. Not many can afford it any more and it is getting harder and harder for some. Its sad and I want none of it. Its no kind of freedom when you can only afford the shit food in the super markets, the food that makes you sick and fat because its not real food. Its no kind of freedom when the information fed to you may or may not be true. Its no kind of democracy when your own government watches your every move and has the power to do what they will with you. Its no kind of freedom when you get to choose your leader by how much money they can raise and spend on tacky advertising. It’s a slap in the face. It’s like the wild west. Smoke and mirrors. We are getting lost in the fog.
Peace Out
